What is an otoscope?

Learn more about otoscopes and their uses

Although otoscopes used to be only a tool for doctors, advances in microelectronics have made digital versions of the devices accessible to the masses at a small cost. If you are curious about what is an otoscope used for then continue reading and learn about how these devices now make self-examination much easier for everyone.

What is an otoscope used for?

An otoscope camera is a medical device, which is used to look inside your ears, nose, or throat that has a digital camera on it. Health care providers use otoscopes to view the ear canal and tympanic membrane, or eardrum, and screen for illness during regular check-ups. Usually, otoscope cameras are connected to a LCD screen for convenient viewing and can also record digital photos or video to view later. An otoscope camera can give more reliable access to the tympanic membrane, improved patient comfort, medical documentation and sharing of the image with the patient, students, parents, and colleagues.

What is the purpose of an otoscope?

Otoscopes were used by doctors to perform patient examinations of the ear, nose, and throat. Traditionally, these were optical otoscopes requiring you to look through them so they were impossible to use on yourself. Now, digital otoscopes allow you to perform a self examination without a doctor because they either have their own screen or they use the screen of a nearby mobile device to display the view from their camera. The view they provide can give you a lot of information about your personal health - if you have an ear infection, what your tonsils look like, if you have a visible injury to a tooth, what a mole looks like on your head, or a variety of other pieces of information.

What is the difference between an otoscope and ophthalmoscope?

Ophthalmoscopes are used to detect and evaluate symptoms of retinal detachment or eye diseases such as glaucoma. Ophthalmoscopy may also be done if you have signs or symptoms of high blood pressure, diabetes, or other diseases that affect the blood vessels. As for what is the difference between an otoscope and ophthalmoscope, well the otoscopes are used for the ear, nose, throat, or skin, but not the eyes. We don’t recommend using an otoscope to look in the eyes, or using an ophthalmoscope to look somewhere other than the eyes.
